Balance your Nervous SYstem: Grounding

When we are grounded, we have more capacity to weather storms in our life without being knocked over. Here are some simple strategies to promote grounding:

  • Lie on your back and bring your legs up the wall or rest your legs on the seat of a chair. Feel the ground supporting you as you rest and breathe.

  • Place your hands on your belly and allow breath to drop down into your abdomen. Feel the sensation of the rise and fall of your hands with your breath.

  • Sit in a chair or on the ground. Rub your hands together until they get warm. Place your warm hands on your thighs and let the weight and warmth of your hands provide grounding energy. A weighted blanket or a heating pad can also support grounding.

  • Sigh. Long exhales relax the nervous system.

  • Go outside and be in nature. Notice how you feel when you are in the company of steady, rooted trees.
